The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned a viral video showing police officers in Delta State extrajudicially killing a suspect, calling it an “arbitrary, unprovoked and misguided show of power.”

In its statement on Wednesday, the NBA highlighted how the act “clearly shows that the policeman took the law into his hands” and portrayed the Nigerian Police Force in a bad light.

It emphasised that “no officer of the law, regardless of rank or circumstance, has the right to act as prosecutor, judge, and executioner,” violating Nigeria’s Constitution which presumes innocence until proven guilty.

The association demanded “immediate prosecution and trial of all officers involved,” noting the video shows others “aided or abetted” the killing.

It warned that any shielding of perpetrators would “further erode public confidence in law enforcement.”

NBA directed its Human Rights Committees in Warri, Effurun, and Udu branches, plus national bodies, to monitor the investigation for transparency and urgency.

The group reiterated, “The bad policemen in the Force must be shown the way out to avoid giving it a bad name.”
