The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has announced two suspected cases of Ebola disease in the country’s North-East region.
In an statement shared on Saturday, the agency stated, “Two suspected cases of Ebola disease have been identified in Nigeria’s North-East region. Both individuals have been isolated, contact identification and listing is ongoing, and laboratory testing is being conducted.”
NCDC emphasised that the cases remain unconfirmed.
“Being classified as suspected cases does not mean they are confirmed Ebola cases; confirmation is subject to laboratory results,” the statement said.
The public was advised to “maintain good hand hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation and follow guidance from public health authorities.”
This latest alert comes weeks after Nigeria recorded its first confirmed Ebola case in about 12 years.
In mid-October 2026, a woman who had travelled from Uganda was diagnosed with the Bundibugyo strain of the virus in Abuja.
She developed symptoms after arrival, was isolated, and later medically evacuated to Switzerland along with her husband.
Health authorities identified and monitored dozens of contacts, and the World Health Organization later indicated Nigeria had no active cases following the evacuation.
The new suspected cases in the North-East are being treated with the same rapid isolation and contact-tracing protocols that helped Nigeria contain the 2014 outbreak and the recent imported case.
Laboratory results are pending.
