The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has launched the Net Billing Regulation 2026, allowing Nigerians who generate electricity from solar systems to sell surplus power back to the national grid.
This was gathered in a statement shared on X by Nation Grid.
Under the new rule, eligible customers with renewable installations, primarily solar photovoltaic systems may use generated electricity for their own needs and export excess energy to their distribution company’s network.
Participants will receive credits based on an export tariff approved by NERC.
The regulation applies to systems sized between 50 kilowatt‑peak (kWp) and 1.5 megawatt‑peak (MWp), covering large residential setups as well as commercial and industrial facilities.
Applicants must be connected to a licensed distribution company’s network.
NERC said the move aims to expand access to clean energy, ease pressure on the national grid, attract private investment in distributed generation, and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The commission called the Net Billing Regulation a major development that lets businesses, industries and larger households contribute to national power supply while earning compensation for excess electricity generated.
