The Nigerian Insurers Association has sympathised with individuals, families and businesses affected by the recent flooding across several parts of Lagos State, urging insured policyholders to promptly notify their insurers and begin the claims process.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Chairman of the Nigerian Insurers Association, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, the association expressed solidarity with victims who suffered the loss of lives, homes, vehicles, businesses and other valuable assets following persistent heavy rainfall in recent days.
The association acknowledged the emotional, social and financial hardship caused by the flooding, while stressing the need for proper environmental sanitation, responsible waste disposal and regular clearing of drainage channels to reduce flood risks.
According to the NIA, although preventive measures are important, natural disasters can still occur, making insurance a critical financial protection mechanism for individuals and businesses.
The association urged policyholders whose insured properties or businesses were affected by the floods to promptly notify their insurance companies, insurance brokers or insurance agents to commence the claims process.
It noted that early notification and the submission of the required supporting documents would facilitate the timely assessment and settlement of valid claims.
The NIA assured the public that its member companies remain committed to providing professional support and settling genuine claims promptly in line with the terms and conditions of insurance policies.
It also advised policyholders requiring guidance on initiating or processing claims to contact their insurers, insurance brokers, insurance agents or the association for assistance.
The association reiterated that insurance is more than a financial product, describing it as an essential pillar of economic resilience that enables individuals, families and businesses to recover more quickly from unforeseen losses.
It added that as climate-related events such as flooding continue to pose significant risks, adequate insurance protection remains one of the most effective safeguards against financial disruption.
The NIA extended its thoughts and prayers to all those affected by the floods and reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian insurance industry to providing financial relief through the prompt settlement of valid insurance claims.
