Nigeria, Japan renew commitment to strategic partnership

Nigeria and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation, with emphasis on investment, industrialisation, technology transfer and sustainable development.
The renewed commitment followed the successful conclusion of the 10th Nigeria-Japan Special Partnership Forum, held in Abuja on August 27, 2026.
In a statement shared on its official platform on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the forum strengthened efforts to build a more practical and mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries.
“Nigeria and Japan have reaffirmed commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing a more strategic, result-oriented and mutually beneficial partnership following the successful conclusion of the 10th Nigeria-Japan Special Partnership Forum held in Abuja,” the ministry said.
The forum was co-chaired by Nigeria’s Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed and Japan’s Misako Takahashi.
Discussions focused on translating the long-standing Nigeria-Japan relationship into measurable economic and development outcomes, particularly through increased investment, industrial cooperation and technology transfer.
A proposed Nigeria-Japan Industrial and Investment Hub also featured prominently in the deliberations, as both countries explored ways of expanding private-sector collaboration and supporting industrial growth.
Key sectors identified for deeper cooperation included renewable energy, critical minerals, infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare and digital technology.
The forum also reviewed ongoing development interventions by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA, and considered opportunities to strengthen project delivery across priority areas.
The Nigeria-Japan Special Partnership Forum is part of a bilateral consultation mechanism that has been in operation since 2001, providing a platform for officials of both countries to review cooperation and set new priorities for engagement.
