Rights group condemns alleged abuse of seven-year-old girl

The Guard Time Information (GTI) Human Rights Activists Nationwide has condemned the alleged brutal abuse of a seven-year-old girl, Oluebube Ofoma, in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The incident was reported to the police on the evening of September 13, 2026, after the child was allegedly found with severe bodily injuries.
According to preliminary information, the girl was allegedly subjected to severe physical abuse, including injuries reportedly inflicted with a hot knife.
Her mother, identified as 32-year-old Ogechi Ofoma, was arrested in connection with the incident.
The child was reportedly rescued from further harm following the intervention of security personnel from Ibollo Community, Awada-Obosi, and concerned residents.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has begun collaboration with the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, GTI and human rights activists to secure urgent medical attention, protection, counselling and other welfare support for the victim.
The police said the circumstances surrounding the incident remained under investigation, assuring the public that the process would be conducted professionally and in accordance with the law.
“The safety, welfare and best interests of the child remain paramount,” the command said, adding that anyone found culpable would face the full consequences of the law.
The police also commended the Ibollo Community security personnel and residents for their vigilance and swift intervention, which helped save the child and facilitate police action.
Speaking with Dailyeconomy, the Chairman of GTI Human Rights Activists Nationwide, Bibi Oduku, condemned the alleged abuse and called for justice for the victim.
Oduku said the organisation’s legal team in Anambra would closely monitor the case and work with relevant authorities to protect the child’s rights and welfare.
He described the incident as a reminder that “child abuse, torture and all forms of violence against children are unacceptable and must not be tolerated in any community.”
GTI urged parents, guardians, community leaders, security agencies and government institutions to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of child abuse or violence against vulnerable persons to the appropriate authorities.
It stressed that “the protection of every child is a collective responsibility” and that every child deserves to live in safety, dignity and freedom from violence.
