Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after it opened disciplinary proceedings over his departure from the national team camp.
The FPF said its Non-Professional Section decided on October 9 to investigate “any disciplinary relevance” of events reported to it on October 7.
The case has been classified as urgent and referred to the federation’s Disciplinary Investigation Committee.
In its official statement on Saturday, the federation said, “The initiation of disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo, by deliberation of the Non-Professional Section, of October 9, 2026, with the purpose of the investigation of any disciplinary relevance of the facts participated on October 7.”
It added, “Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of establishment, the non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined and the urgent nature was attributed to the process.”
The FPF also confirmed that the matter was sent to its Disciplinary Investigation Committee on October 10, with publicity restricted until the investigation is concluded.
Ronaldo is now waiting for the final verdict and any punishment that may follow.
The suspension is provisional, meaning no final sanction has yet been announced by the federation.
The 41-year-old had earlier apologised publicly for leaving Portugal’s camp and was reported to have suggested a punishment himself.
However, the FPF’s decision to open a formal case means the matter will now be examined through its disciplinary process.
