Troops of Sector 6, Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP) on Thursday thwarted an early‑morning attack on a guard post at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau state.
According to a statement obtained from Nigerian Army on Thursday, the assailants attempted to breach the institute’s perimeter at about 12:10 a.m. under cover of darkness and were met by vigilant soldiers.
A decisive exchange of fire followed, resulting in the neutralisation of one attacker.
The remaining suspects fled toward surrounding high ground with gunshot wounds.
No casualties were recorded among the troops.
Troops recovered an AK‑pattern rifle bearing registration number CO‑3175 from the neutralised assailant.
The rifle, loaded with sixteen rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition, was preliminarily identified as belonging to a Nigerian Army soldier who was killed during an earlier clash with unidentified militia at the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Vom, on 11 April 2026.
The recovered weapon is now in military custody pending further investigation into links with prior attacks in the Kuru‑Vom axis.
The remains of the neutralised assailant were evacuated to the mortuary via the appropriate authorities.
Security forces have intensified area domination patrols, clearance operations and active pursuit efforts around NIPSS Kuru and neighbouring communities to deny criminal elements freedom of action and safeguard staff, residents and national assets.
Normal activities at the institute continue without interruption, the statement said.
“The Nigerian Army, through Operation ENDURING PEACE, reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting lives, securing strategic national institutions and restoring lasting peace across Plateau State,” the statement added, urging the public to remain calm and report suspicious movement to security agencies.
