Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have rescued ten National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and teachers abducted during an Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attack on the Technical Secondary School in Lassa Community, Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack which according a statement obtained from the Nigerian Army on Monday occurred at about 0900 hours on Monday, 29 June 2026, while students were writing exams.

Theatre Command immediately scrambled strike and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft from the Air Component of OPHK to support ground troops mobilised for a coordinated search-and-rescue operation.

“With air platforms providing overwatch and guidance, troops made contact around Daggu and, after an exchange of fire, successfully rescued ten victims who were unhurt and are now receiving care and support,” Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, said in a statement on Monday.

Troops pursued the fleeing terrorists during the contact, inflicting casualties on the insurgents and seizing seven motorcycles used in the attack, a move that significantly disrupted their escape.

One gallant OPHK soldier and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) were killed in the intense firefight.

“Their courage, selflessness and unwavering commitment exemplify the collective resolve of security forces and local volunteers who continue to risk their lives daily to protect innocent citizens and restore peace across the North East,” Captain Goni said.

Operations continue to locate and rescue remaining abductees and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders, troops have intensified operations and reinforced security measures across the affected area to protect vulnerable communities and schools.

The military described the attack as evidence of terrorists’ desperation amid sustained pressure from ongoing operations, adding that such attacks on soft targets will not deter OPHK’s resolve to dismantle terror networks and restore lasting peace.

Members of the public were urged to remain vigilant, provide timely and credible information to security agencies, and rely on official channels for verified updates as operations continue.
