Uber leaves Nigeria after 12 years

Global ride-hailing company Uber has announced plans to wind down its operations in Nigeria after 12 years in the country.

The company said its exit would take effect on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

In a statement, Uber said the decision followed a “thorough review” of its business operations.

“We are writing to share some difficult news. After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company said.

Uber launched its services in Lagos in 2014, connecting passengers with independent transportation providers through its ride-hailing platform.

Reflecting on its time in the country, the company said, “Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers.”

The company thanked Nigerians for using its platform for daily commutes, visits to family and friends, and movement around the city.

“Whether it was a morning commute, a ride to see loved ones, or exploring the city, thank you for trusting the platform to connect you to a driver to get you there safely,” Uber said.

It apologised for the disruption the decision could cause and said its help centre would remain available until September 23 to assist customers with final account-related enquiries.

“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” the company added.

Uber’s operations in Nigeria had faced challenges over the years, including protests by drivers over fares, commission rates and alleged poor treatment in 2017, 2023 and 2025.

Since its launch in 2009, Uber has reportedly withdrawn from 14 countries across Asia and Africa.
