President Donald Trump has floated renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “TRUMP STRAIT”.

He asserted in a September 2, 2026 Truth Social post that the critical oil chokepoint is now under U.S. control.

“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he wrote.

The proposal arrives amid a six-month U.S.–Iran confrontation that has featured naval blockades, repeated U.S. strikes on Iranian targets, mine‑clearing operations, and sharply reduced shipping through the strait, which Trump has repeatedly described as being under “almost total” or “almost complete” American control.

In recent days, U.S. forces have carried out what Trump called “large and powerful” strikes near the waterway in retaliation for what he described as a failed Iranian attempt to lay sea mines, while Iran has launched missile and drone attacks in response.

The suggestion to rebrand the strait has drawn immediate attention as a mix of realpolitik and self‑branding, even as the waterway remains contested and regional hostilities continue to disrupt maritime traffic.
