Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer has welcomed what he described as “progress towards an agreement between the US and Iran”.

The agreement, according to a statement release by the Prime Minister on Sunday aimed at ending the 2026 conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz to unrestricted navigation, preventing Iranian nuclear development, and securing a long-term diplomatic settlement.

“I welcome the progress towards an agreement between the US and Iran,” Starmer said.

“We need to see an agreement that brings the conflict to an end and reopens the Strait of Hormuz, with unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation. It’s vital that Iran must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.

“My government will continue to do everything we can to protect British people from the impact of this conflict. We will work with our international partners to seize this moment and achieve a long-term diplomatic settlement, he added.

Starmer also pledged that his government would shield British citizens from the conflict’s economic fallout while working alongside allies to advance peace efforts.

His comments, posted online, provoked immediate backlash from critics who accused him of irrelevance, called for his resignation, and urged a greater focus on domestic issues such as crime and public safety.
