The Department of Insurance and Actuarial Science at the University of Lagos recently paid a working visit to the headquarters of Tangerine Africa, as part of a broader effort to deepen collaboration between academic institutions and the insurance industry in Nigeria.
The visit brought together faculty members and senior industry leaders for a series of rich conversations around research, knowledge sharing, talent development, and the future of insurance education in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Both institutions explored pathways to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real world industry practice, with emphasis on exposing students and faculty to live industry environments and supporting applied, experiential learning.
A significant portion of the engagement centred on the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence in insurance and actuarial science. Participants examined how AI is reshaping actuarial work and broader insurance operations, while stressing the need to communicate insurance solutions in clearer, more relatable terms to everyday Nigerians.
The discussions also turned to how insurance products can be better designed to reflect the actual realities, needs, and financial experiences of the people they serve reinforcing the view that innovation in the sector must remain grounded in human-centred thinking.
The University of Lagos delegation was led by the Head of Department, Prof. I. A. Adeleke, and included distinguished faculty members Prof. Aduloju, Prof. Obalola, Prof. Olowokudejo, Mr. Akeem Agboola, Mr. Allwell, Dr. O. S. Fadun, Dr. Shogunro, Mrs. Aisha Usman, Dr. Oko-Osi, and Dr. Mesike.
They were received by senior leaders of Tangerine Africa, including the Executive Directors of Tangerine General Insurance and Tangerine Life Insurance, Temitope Adewale and Olanrewaju Ibidapo, as well as the Managing Directors of both subsidiaries, Ademayowa Adeduro and Kehinde Borisade.
The Tangerine leadership team welcomed the engagement warmly and reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining collaboration with academia in advancing insurance education, research, and talent development in Nigeria.
The session concluded with remarks from members of the university delegation, who expressed appreciation for the warm reception and the quality of engagement at Tangerine Africa’s headquarters.
The visit reflects a growing and deliberate commitment on both sides to strengthen ties between academia and industry with a shared vision of driving learning, innovation, and the development of a stronger, more relevant insurance sector in Nigeria.
