Jude Bellingham walked across a rain-slicked pitch after England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 and stopped to embrace 17‑year‑old Gilberto Mora, the tournament’s youngest player.

In a moment that captured the tournament’s spirit, Bellingham removed his shirt and handed it to the distraught Mexican forward as cameras and fans looked on.

The match, played before a packed Estadio Azteca crowd was a rollercoaster of emotion.

Bellingham opened the scoring with a lightning-fast brace, netting twice in the space of 98 seconds to overturn an early advantage.

England’s talisman then made way for Harry Kane, who converted a penalty to make it 3-1.

Mexico fought back late through Julián Quiñones and a Raúl Jiménez penalty, but England held on despite finishing with 10 men after Jarell Quansah was shown a red card.

Mora, who had already announced himself on the world stage with a fine brace that tested England’s defence, was left in tears following the narrow defeat.

Bellingham, whose quick double and composed leadership helped send England into a quarterfinal meeting with Norway approached the young Mexican, exchanged words and offered his jersey as a consolation.

“This is what football should be. Two generations, different countries, united by respect,” an onlooker said.

The exchange drew praise across social media who noted the significance of an elite player publicly acknowledging a young opponent’s performance.

The result eliminates co-host Mexico from the tournament and moves England into the last eight, where they will face Norway.

For Mora, the loss will be a painful lesson but the souvenir from Bellingham and the international attention after his two goals could prove a career-defining moment
