Cape Verde’s national team received a rapturous reception at Praia International Airport today after a breakthrough debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, finishing as one of the tournament’s most celebrated underdogs despite a narrow knockout-stage exit.

The Blue Sharks captured global attention by advancing from a difficult group unbeaten — a 0-0 draw with Spain, a dramatic 2-2 draw with Uruguay, and a result that secured progression against Saudi Arabia before bowing out in the round of 32 following a heart-stopping extra-time defeat to Argentina.

Their run makes Cape Verde the smallest nation by population to reach the World Cup knockouts.

Fans and officials lined the airport concourses waving flags and chanting as players stepped off the plane; videos shared on social media showed jubilant scenes of supporters embracing squad members, dancing and holding banners praising the team’s grit and unity.

Government ministers and football federation representatives joined the reception, hailing the squad’s achievements as “a moment of national unity and pride.”

On the pitch, Cape Verde’s tournament was defined by defensive organisation, tactical discipline and moments of attacking bravery most notably a late equaliser that pushed the Argentina tie into extra time and drew widespread admiration from commentators and rival fans.
