Lagos State lawmaker and actor Desmond Elliot has admitted he signed the January 2025 impeachment notice that sought to remove Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, saying he believed the action had backing from the presidency.
Elliot in an interview with Channels TV on Tuesday said he was away in South Africa for a wedding when the impeachment process began.
“I was in South Africa for a wedding when the impeachment of Obasa commenced. I was confused when I returned. I saw my colleagues signing and I signed too thinking the order was from the presidency,” he said, adding that President Bola Tinubu later called the lawmakers and instructed them to reinstate Obasa.
“The president called us to return the speaker which we did,” Elliot said.
Elliot’s admission follows public revelations by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, who said Elliot’s involvement in the episode nearly cost him his job.
