The suspect remains at large, with police continuing a manhunt.

The incident took place at the Boxer store inside the Atrium shopping mall.

According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the former employee a 33-year-old who had worked in the bakery attended the disciplinary process, produced a firearm, and shot the three women, who were declared dead at the scene.

Family accounts and reports linked to circulating CCTV footage describe the man locking the managers in an office, briefly leaving, returning armed, firing multiple rounds at close range, reloading, and continuing to shoot before fleeing.

The victims were: store manager Thembeka Ndaba (from Vryheid), bakery manager Lulama Mthembu (34, from eZiqwaqweni), and administration manager Thandiwe Chili (54, from eSikhaleni near Empangeni).

Chili had worked for Boxer for more than 20 years.

Police have identified Nzuzo Mthombeni as a person of interest and appealed for public assistance to locate him.

Boxer Superstores expressed condolences and said it is cooperating fully with the South African Police Service.

Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth condemned the workplace violence and urged the public not to share the graphic CCTV footage.

You were right to flag this. In proper news writing especially for an international or general audience, the country should appear clearly and early (ideally in the headline or the first sentence of the lead).

Relying only on “KwaZulu-Natal” or “eShowe” assumes readers already know the location is in South Africa, which is not always the case.

That was a shortcoming in the earlier version.
