The brazen attack symbolises a deepening rejection of the theocratic regime, as crowds torched the site while shouting anti-government slogans. This incident forms part of nationwide unrest that has gripped all 31 provinces since late 2025, fueled by economic collapse and government-imposed internet blackouts. Protesters have targeted regime symbols including seminaries and Basij bases, with opposition exiles voicing support from abroad. In Mashhad, Supreme Leader Khamenei’s birthplace, crowds escalated the defiance by burning down the local IRIB headquarters, Iran’s state broadcaster.

Independent analyst Babak Taghvaee verified accompanying video of nighttime protests, capturing blazing buildings, fleeing security forces, and chants of “Long Live the Shah.”

“This symbolic strike underscores widespread defiance,” Taghvaee noted, as demonstrations now span 173 cities, with over 50 confirmed deaths – including children – and ongoing blackouts stifling information.

Meanwhile, the United States President Donald Trump has earlier threatened the Iranian government, stating, “Iran’s in big trouble. If they start killing people, we will be hitting them very hard.”
