Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has publicly endorsed Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s ambition to lead Nigeria, declaring him “qualified” to be president.

Speaking at the inauguration of Makinde’s Action People’s Movement (APM) presidential campaign office in Abuja on Monday, Obi said, “We have a candidate who is contesting for president, my dear brother Makinde. Is he qualified to be president? Yes, he is qualified.”

Obi used the occasion to call for greater cohesion among opposition forces, urging all candidates to prioritise free and fair elections and to work together after the 2027 polls to tackle hunger, poverty and insecurity, “regardless of who wins.”

The appearance underscores intensifying opposition manoeuvring ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with several high-profile figures—including Obi (NDC), Makinde (APM) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar (ADC) positioning themselves as challengers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
