In a lighthearted exchange that touched on one of football’s oldest rivalries, Pope Leo XIV has quipped that Prevost is for Real Madrid.
Pope Leo XIV when he was asked whether he supports Real Madrid or Barcelona replying that “The Pope is for all teams, but Prevost is for Real Madrid.”
The remark, referencing Prevost, widely understood to be a longtime aide and former driver who frequently accompanies the pontiff came during a short on‑camera moment captured aboard a flight to Spain when Leo was still Cardinal Prevost.
A 14‑second clip attached to Real Madrid’s welcoming post on Saturday shows the then‑cardinal answering the question diplomatically before the caption declared him a Madridista.
Real Madrid’s official account reacted promptly, posting a celebratory message tagging the newly elected pope: “The Pope is Real Madrid’s” followed by a white heart emoji.
The club also wrote, “The Pope is a Real Madrid fan. Welcome, Leo XIV!,” alongside the brief video.
The exchange, delivered with warm humour, offered a moment of levity amid the early days of Pope Leo’s pontificate, which began in 2025.
While the pontiff emphasised impartiality, his nod to Prevost added a personal touch that Madrid supporters were quick to embrace.
