United States President Donald Trump has announced that he has canceled a planned trip by US representatives to Islamabad, Pakistan, for indirect talks with Iran, dismissing the effort as a waste of time amid disarray in Tehran’s leadership.
In a post, Trump wrote, “I just cancelled the trip of my representatives going to Islamabad, Pakistan, to meet with the Iranians. Too much time wasted on traveling, too much work! Besides which, there is tremendous infighting and confusion within their ‘leadership.’ Nobody knows who is in charge, including them. Also, we have all the cards, they have none! If they want to talk, all they have to do is call!!!”
The decision halts what would have been meetings between US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Iranian officials via Pakistani mediation.
Iran’s foreign minister visited Pakistan on Friday to facilitate discussions but explicitly denied any direct talks with the American delegation, Dailyeconomy reports.
Trump’s move comes against the backdrop of a recently extended ceasefire following heightened US-Iran tensions.
He framed the US as holding the upper hand, insisting Iran initiate contact if serious about negotiations.
