Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed it carried out ballistic missile and drone strikes on the King Hussein and Al-Azraq air bases in Jordan, alleging “significant” damage to military infrastructure and fighter-jet facilities.
The IRGC said the assault, codenamed “Ya Muhammad ibn Abdullah” and described as part of its “Punishment of the Aggressor” operation, was launched in retaliation for a United States attack on rocket launchers on Iran’s Larak Island.
Washington reportedly targeted the launchers after alleging they were preparing to deploy sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
In its statement, the IRGC said its aerospace force targeted technical and maintenance infrastructure as well as areas where US fighter jets were stationed at the two bases, which host American personnel.
It claimed the operation inflicted heavy damage.
However, Jordan’s Armed Forces said its air-defence systems intercepted and destroyed eight missiles that entered the country’s airspace early Monday, before they could threaten civilians or property.
Jordanian authorities reported no injuries, while reports citing the military said there was no confirmed significant damage at the targeted facilities.
The exchange marks a sharp escalation in hostilities around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic global oil-shipping route.
The IRGC also warned that any further attacks would draw what it described as “more devastating responses.”
