Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has asserted that Belarus possesses nuclear weapons but insisted the country is not using them as a threat, describing the capability as defensive and intended to protect Belarus and its partners “from Vladivostok onward.”

Speaking in a meeting with Russian President, Puttin on Thursday, Lukashenko said, “We are not threatening anyone with nuclear weapons, but we do have them.

“We are showing our hand, we are showing that we can use it.”

In video footage Lukashenko appears in uniform and discusses joint military readiness with Russian officers, praising what he described as satisfactory collaboration with Russian generals.

He said security measures were being maintained across multiple sites in Belarus and central Russia as part of ongoing drills.

The comments come amid recent joint nuclear exercises conducted with Russia and follow Lukashenko’s May 2026 calls for heightened military posture near Belarus’s western border with NATO states.
