FIFA has barred Egypt from wearing a national team shirt emblazoned with seven stars at the FIFA World Cup because those stars commemorate the country’s seven Africa Cup of Nations titles, not FIFA World Cup victories.

Under FIFA’s official kit regulations, stars shown on World Cup jerseys are reserved to signify FIFA World Cup championship wins.

The rule means only nations that have won the World Cup may display stars for that achievement on shirts worn at FIFA tournaments.

Egypt’s seven stars, organisers say, therefore do not meet the criteria for display at the World Cup.

The decision has triggered debate among supporters online.

Some fans described the move as straightforward enforcement of a clear regulation, while others called it overly strict and argued the stars celebrate genuine national achievements in international football.
