Manchester United will reduce the payout owed to former head coach Ruben Amorim if he accepts the AC Milan managerial role, Sky Sports says.

United currently faces a compensation bill of up to £15.9 million to Amorim and members of his backroom staff after dismissing him in January 2026.

That figure reflects contractual termination payments agreed when the club parted ways with the coach, who was hired by United in late 2024.

However, the club’s liability would be trimmed substantially if Amorim secures a new position at Milan.

Football contracts typically include clauses that offset termination payments when a dismissed coach takes subsequent employment, meaning any salary received from AC Milan would be deducted from the amount United must pay.

Amorim has emerged as the leading candidate for the AC Milan job following advanced talks between the parties.

The prospective move would benefit both sides: Milan would gain a high-profile manager with a strong domestic reputation, while United would lower its financial outlay linked to the January sacking.

Negotiations between Amorim and Milan are reported to be at an advanced stage, with a decision expected in the coming days.
