The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration, commemorating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.

In a statement issued on Friday through the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the government extended greetings to Muslims in Nigeria and in the diaspora, while urging citizens to reflect on the values embodied by the Prophet’s life.

“The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 25th August 2026 a public holiday in honour of this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, celebrated in remembrance of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him),” the statement said.

Tunji-Ojo said Eid-ul-Mawlid offered Nigerians an opportunity to embrace compassion, humility, and service to others.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” the Minister said.

The Minister also called on Nigerians to use the period to pray for national peace, unity and cohesion, stressing that the task of building a united country was a collective responsibility.

He urged citizens to observe the celebration with restraint and mutual respect, while wishing the Muslim community a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid.

Tunji-Ojo further restated the commitment of the present administration to protecting lives and property and ensuring peace across the country.
