Nigeria, Germany reaffirm commitment to deepening strategic partnership

Nigeria and Germany have reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening bilateral ties, with a focus on trade, investment, renewable energy, and regional security.
The commitment came during a meeting on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Johann David Wadephul, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
According to a press release from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu welcomed Dr Wadephul on his first official visit to Nigeria, describing it as “a reflection of the enduring friendship between both countries, built over more than six decades on mutual respect, shared values and productive cooperation.”
The two ministers reviewed the strong state of relations and pledged to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors, including: Political dialogue, trade and investment, sustainable development, renewable energy, critical minerals, digital innovation, artificial intelligence and agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, infrastructure, and the green economy.
The release highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to the outcomes of the Fifth Session of the Nigeria-Germany Binational Commission. Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu also welcomed Germany’s support for initiatives like the Presidential Power Initiative and renewable energy transition.
Dr Wadephul described Nigeria as “Germany’s foremost strategic partner in West Africa and one of its most important partners on the African continent,” noting that Nigeria is Germany’s second-largest trading partner in Sub-Saharan Africa, with over one hundred German companies operating there.
Discussions also covered regional and global challenges.
Both sides addressed terrorism, violent extremism, climate change, irregular migration, and food insecurity, emphasising the need for stronger international partnerships.
On migration and mobility, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu raised concerns about delays in processing student and medical visas for Nigerians.
Dr Wadephul acknowledged these issues and assured that German authorities would review them, including a specific humanitarian case.
The meeting concluded positively, with both ministers expressing confidence that the discussions would further consolidate the strategic partnership and contribute to “regional peace, economic prosperity and sustainable development.”
