United Bank for Africa (UBA) has issued a strong warning over what it described as a false and defamatory publication circulating on social media alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, has divorced his wife.
In a formal notice signed by the Group Head of Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, Alero Ladipo, the bank dismissed the claims as “entirely fabricated, reckless, and without basis,” adding that the publication was designed to mislead the public and damage the reputation of its chairman.
UBA disclosed that the matter has been reported to law enforcement authorities, who have commenced investigations. According to the statement, three individuals allegedly linked to the creation and dissemination of the content have been arrested.
Those named include Kingsley Akunemeihe, Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue.
The bank further indicated that investigations are ongoing and may lead to additional arrests and prosecutions of others involved in originating or amplifying the claims.
UBA also issued a cease-and-desist directive to individuals, platforms, and entities involved in sharing the publication, urging them to immediately remove the content and refrain from further dissemination.
It warned that all parties must preserve relevant records, including digital communications and metadata, pending possible legal proceedings.
“Failure to comply will result in the initiation of legal action, including claims for defamation, damages, and injunctive relief,” the statement noted.
The bank reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the reputation and integrity of its brand and leadership, stressing that it would pursue all available legal avenues—both civil and criminal—to ensure accountability.
The development highlights growing concerns over the spread of misinformation on social media and its potential legal consequences.
