Lagos State Environment and Water Resources Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab has clarified the government’s position on street-based car spotting, saying enthusiasts may continue the activity at designated car lots but not on public roads.

The clarification comes after a viral video by content creator “Ola of Lagos” showing car spotting at the Ikoyi roundabout sparked online debate over a possible crackdown on the practice.

In a post on X, Wahab addressed the controversy directly, drawing a line between lawful hobbyist activity and behaviour that disrupts traffic or violates privacy.

Wahab wrote on X, You can do your car spotting without constituting a nuisance or obstructing the road in any way.

“You are welcome to visit car lots and engage in your car-spotting activities there. However, staying on the road for this purpose will not be allowed in any way.

“Aside from being a nuisance, it is also a breach of privacy and will not be tolerated by the State Government. Thank you for your understanding!”

The commissioner cited road obstruction, public nuisance, and privacy violations as key reasons for the restriction, framing the move as a public-order and safety measure rather than a blanket ban on car culture.
