FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reaffirmed that Iran will take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite tensions between Iran and the United States.
Speaking at the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver, Infantino said Iran would “of course” be at the tournament and would “of course” play matches in the United States.
“Of course Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Infantino said, adding, “And of course Iran will play in the United States of America.”
His comments underscore FIFA’s position that football should remain a unifying force, with Iran’s group-stage fixtures still set to take place at U.S. venues as originally scheduled.
The remarks have also drawn renewed attention to FIFA’s stance on international sanctions in sport, with some pointing out that Russia remains banned from competition while Iran continues to be included.
