United States President Donald Trump has recounted his advisors’ rejection of renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait”, drawing laughs while highlighting ongoing U.S.-Iran frictions over the vital oil chokepoint.
Trump quipped, “The Strait. You can call it the Strait of Hormuz or the Hormuz Strait. I said, ‘Which is better?’ They say either one’s okay, but you could call them both. The only thing that they cannot be called is the Trump Strait.”
The remark echoes Trump’s March 2026 speech, where he jokingly dubbed it the “Strait of Trump” to pressure Iran into reopening the waterway.
Iran has imposed shipping restrictions amid escalating tensions, disrupting global oil flows.
The strait handles about 20% of the world’s oil trade daily, prompting U.S. threats of blockades and military action.
