United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has claimed that Navy and Air Force fighter jets struck 10 Iranian military targets.
CENTCOM in a statement on Sunday noted that the strike escalated to multiple locations in and near the Strait of Hormuz in direct response to Iran’s drone attack on the merchant vessel M/T Kiku.
“U.S. Navy and Air Force fighter jets conducted strikes tonight on 10 Iranian military targets at multiple locations in and near the Strait of Hormuz for Iran’s drone attack on M/T Kiku,” CENTCOM wrote in a statement.
The command said the strikes were calibrated to degrade Iranian capabilities used to target merchant shipping and protect international maritime freedom of navigation.
The action follows a period of heightened tensions in the Gulf, where commercial shipping has been repeatedly targeted in separate incidents this year.
Washington has maintained that it will respond to attacks on internationally flagged vessels and crews, while Tehran has accused U.S. forces of destabilizing regional security.
CENTCOM added that it coordinated the operation with regional partners and remains prepared to take further measures to protect maritime commerce if necessary.
