In his first major squad update as Chelsea manager, Xabi Alonso has confirmed that winger, Alejandro Garnacho is set to leave the club, citing interest from other teams and expressing hope for an amicable resolution.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Alonso stated, “There is interest in him from other clubs. Hopefully it finishes in the best possible way for everyone.”
The announcement comes as Garnacho, who joined Chelsea from Manchester United just one year ago in a £40 million deal in August 2025, has been absent from pre-season training.
The 22-year-old Argentine international is actively seeking regular first-team football, which has not materialised at Stamford Bridge.
Garnacho, born in Madrid in 2004 to a Spanish father and Argentine mother, rose to prominence at Manchester United’s academy before breaking into the first team.
He represented Spain at youth level but ultimately committed to Argentina’s senior national team.
Known for his pace, dribbling, and flair on the wing, Garnacho had moments of brilliance at United but reportedly fell out of favour under their management.
Chelsea, under previous leadership, signed him in late summer 2025 with a long-term contract running to 2032, positioning him as a key attacking prospect.
However, in his debut season, Garnacho struggled to secure a consistent starting role.
He made 43 appearances across all competitions, scoring 8 goals and providing 4 assists, but started just one of the club’s last 12 matches.
His inconsistent form and limited minutes led to frustration on both sides.
The arrival of Xabi Alonso as Chelsea’s new manager in July 2026 following his successful spells at Bayer Leverkusen and a brief stint at Real Madrid has accelerated squad restructuring.
Alonso and the club are prioritising players who fit their tactical vision, viewing Garnacho as surplus to requirements.
Chelsea are demanding around €50 million (£42.5m) for a permanent sale, rejecting loan proposals, with interest reported from Premier League clubs, European sides (including potential interest from teams like Roma), and the Saudi Pro League.
Manchester United stand to receive a 10% sell-on fee.
