Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has claimed that Tehran has honoured its commitments under the mid‑June 2026 US‑Iran memorandum of understanding (MoU) and accused US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent of violating Paragraph 9, which requires both sides to maintain the status quo and avoid new sanctions.

Araghchi wrote, “Iran has so far kept its word, unlike the so‑called U.S. Treasury Secretary who is violating Para 9 of the MoU. That violation follows other violations and missteps by the United States. Reality check: There can only be mutual compliance.”

The statement was issued in response to recent US Treasury sanctions targeting Iran‑linked bankers, exchange houses and other entities.

Washington imposed the measures amid heightened tensions following Iranian activity in the Strait of Hormuz and US President Trump’s declaration that the ceasefire was over, even as talks were expected to resume.

Araghchi framed the Treasury actions as part of a pattern of US breaches that undermine the fragile truce framework, arguing that only reciprocal adherence can preserve the agreement.

Tehran’s remarks are likely to complicate diplomatic efforts to stabilise the situation and could prompt further Iranian countermeasures or demands for remedial steps before negotiations continue.
