Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has commemorated the 16th anniversary of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s death on Tuesday.

Jonathan in a statement on Tuesday, hailed his predecessor as a “servant leader,” “icon of integrity,” and “Gentleman President.”

In the tribute, Jonathan reflected on their close partnership, calling Yar’Adua not just his boss but a “brother and worthy partner in service.”

He emphasised their shared vision for a Nigeria rooted in justice, rule of law, and inclusive governance, praising Yar’Adua’s humility and commitment to national stability over personal gain.

“His record in peace-building stands as an enduring legacy,” Jonathan wrote, urging current leaders to emulate Yar’Adua’s transparency, accountability, and love for the people.

He thereby concluded with a prayer for Yar’Adua’s eternal rest in Al-Jannah Firdaus.

Yar’Adua served as president from 2007 until his death on May 5, 2010, at age 58 from complications related to acute pericarditis.

His brief tenure featured landmark initiatives like the Niger Delta Amnesty Program to curb militancy, a seven-point agenda for development, public asset declarations to promote transparency, and a fuel price cut from ₦75 to ₦65 per litre.
