Nigerian military forces have rescued more than 47 people who had been held captive by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants in Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, the presidency confirmed on Tuesday.
Special Adviser to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun said the operation succeeded after sustained pressure on insurgent positions in the Lake Chad region forced fighters to abandon their hideouts.
“Gallant Nigerian troops have rescued over 47 people who were held captive by ISWAP terrorists in Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State,” the adviser said.
According to the statement, the rescue followed intensified military pressure and targeted attacks on terrorist locations in the Lake Chad area, which compelled the militants to flee and allowed the captives to escape.
“The rescued persons are currently receiving medical attention and humanitarian support at a secure location,” the statement added.
Military sources say the recovered civilians are being screened and provided with immediate healthcare and relief assistance while security operations continue in the area to prevent the re-establishment of militant camps.
