Former Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and former Housing and Urban Development Minister Ahmed Musa Dangiwa have resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, contrary to rumours of dismissal, according to a State House statement on Wednesday.

Edun, who turned 70 on Monday amid recent health challenges, submitted his resignation letter on his birthday, a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy) said.

In it, he expressed gratitude to the President, stating, “It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

He added, “Under your leadership, Nigeria has emerged stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected,” before wishing Tinubu “every success in the future.”

Prior to the official announcement by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Edun paid a valedictory visit to the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, holding an hour-long discussion with Tinubu before stepping away to focus on private business.

Dangiwa, an architect and former managing director of the Federal Mortgage Bank (2015–2022) and Secretary to the Katsina State Government, also tendered his resignation.

He thanked Tinubu “for the opportunity given him to serve in the Federal Executive Council.”

Edun brought extensive experience to the role, having served as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance (1999–2004) under then-Governor Tinubu.

His career included stints at Chase Merchant Bank, the World Bank via its Young Professionals program, and founding roles at Investment Banking & Trust Company (now Stanbic IBTC) and Denham Management (later Chapelhill Denham Group).

President Tinubu praised both ministers for their “dedicated service and significant contributions to the administration’s economic reform programme” and wished them success ahead.

He has directed new Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele to “consolidate ongoing reforms and advance the administration’s fiscal and economic objectives with renewed focus, discipline, and innovation.”

Tinubu plans to soon forward Katsina native Muttaqha Rabe Darma, Dangiwa’s successor as Housing Minister nominee, to the Senate for confirmation.
