Two high‑profile Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) commanders have surrendered to troops of Operation HADIN KAI.

The terririst commanders according to a statement obtained from the Nigerian Army on Thursday surrendered on Monday, June 8, 2026, marking another significant development in the multi‑year counter‑terrorism campaign in the Lake Chad region.

Identified as Ismail Mohammed and Abu Umar, the pair are currently in military custody and “undergoing appropriate profiling and debriefing procedures,” the Joint Task Force (North East) said in a statement.

Preliminary assessments indicate both men held strategic roles within the insurgent hierarchy and operated in the Mangari axis of the Lake Chad theatre.

According to the military, Ismail Mohammed was “a close associate of senior ISWAP Leader Baa Shuwa” and had “extensive knowledge of the group’s command structure and activities.”

Abu Umar was described as a “skilled explosives specialist” responsible for the fabrication and maintenance of vehicle‑borne improvised explosive devices and other combat‑support equipment used by the group.

Interrogation of the surrendered men also revealed that another high‑profile ISWAP figure, Mohammed Khalifa, a member of the group’s Shurah Council, was neutralised during recent joint operations by Operation HADIN KAI.

The Joint Task Force said the defections represent a major setback for the insurgency.

“The surrender of the two commanders represents a major setback to the terrorist organisation, particularly given their experience, influence and technical expertise acquired over several years within the insurgent network,” the statement read.

It added that their decision to flee and surrender “underscores the effectiveness of sustained offensive operations by troops of Operation HADIN KAI, complemented by precision engagements conducted with the support of Allied Partners.”

The statement claimed continued pressure across the theatre has degraded terrorist capabilities, weakened operational networks and compelled increasing numbers of insurgents to surrender.

“This development further demonstrates the growing desperation and declining morale within terrorist ranks as relentless military pressure continues to deny them freedom of action and safe havens,” the statement said.

Operation HADIN KAI reiterated its commitment to maintain pressure on remaining terrorist elements and to exploit “all available opportunities to dismantle terrorist networks and restore lasting stability to affected communities,” the statement concluded.
