The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a sergeant caught in a viral social media video exhibiting behaviour far below the force’s standards, according to a statement issued on Sunday by DCP Anthony Okon Placid, Force Public Relations Officer.
The footage, which surfaced online, showed a police officer in camouflage uniform engaging in conduct deemed grossly inappropriate.
“The Nigeria Police Force has taken firm and decisive action following the circulation of a video on social media showing a police officer in camouflage uniform displaying conduct grossly inconsistent with the standards of the Force,” DCP Placid stated.
The Ekiti State Police Command swiftly identified the officer as a sergeant attached to the Ikole-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters.
He has been taken into custody pending disciplinary action, with CP Falade Adegoroye Michael ordering a full psychological and medical evaluation.
This step ensures “the Force addresses both the conduct violation and any underlying health concerns in a thorough and responsible manner.”
Inspector-General of Police IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu psc(+), NPM, strongly condemned the incident, calling it “a gross deviation from the discipline, professionalism, and decorum required of every member of the Nigeria Police Force.”
He reiterated the force’s “zero-tolerance policy toward substance abuse and any behavior that undermines the integrity of the uniform or erodes public trust in the institution.”
The police emphasised their commitment to upholding professionalism amid ongoing efforts to rebuild public confidence.
