Court grants El‑Rufai N100m bail

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday granted bail to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El‑Rufai in the sum of ₦100 million with one surety in like sum, but attached stringent conditions the defendant must meet before perfecting the bail.

In a ruling delivered in court, Justice Abdulmalik ordered the proposed surety to reside in either the Maitama or Asokoro districts of Abuja and to deposit the original Certificate of Occupancy for a landed property at the court registry.

The surety must be a federal civil servant at Grade Level 17 or above and provide evidence of salary payments for at least three months, authenticated by a letter from a bank manager within the court’s jurisdiction.

Additional conditions require the surety to depose to an affidavit of means, enter into a bail bond, and submit a recent passport photograph to the registry.

The court also directed that a verification letter from the surety’s immediate department and a tax clearance certificate covering the last six months be submitted.

As part of the bail terms, El‑Rufai is to deposit all valid international passports with the court registry.

He was further ordered to report to the headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS) every last Friday of the month by 10 a.m. to sign an attendance register pending the determination of the case.

Justice Abdulmalik warned that failure to comply with any of the conditions would lead to automatic revocation of the bail.

The court also directed El‑Rufai to submit a letter of attestation from the Chairman of the Kaduna Traditional Council.

Legal teams for the prosecution and defence were in court for the ruling.

The case remains before the Federal High Court for further proceedings.
